San Gimignano

Go through your archive, look at pictures of places you’ve been and remember the stories, the air, the tastes, the light.

I remember our drive from Monte A Pescia to San Gimignano after lunch through a hilly, cypress-framed countryside. We walked along the city’s wall and just before we went back into the car and just before the light disappeared, I took two more photos. This was in 2018. I forgot to scan both of them. I only re-discovered them now when I organised my negatives which I like to do in the winter months. I looked at them more closely and they continued telling the day, they brought me to the drive back to Monte A Pescia afterwards, from sunset to darkness, with a stop at the pizza place at the foot of the hill and the climb back up to Monte A Pescia in the dark.

Ich erinnere mich, wie wir nach dem Mittagessen von Monte A Pescia nach San Gimignanon durch die hügelige, Zypressen-gerahmte Landschaft fuhren. Wir liefen auf der Stadtmauer entlang, und kurz bevor wir wieder ins Auto stiegen und bevor das Licht ganz verschwand, machte ich noch zwei Fotos. Das war 2018. Ich vergaß, beide zu scannen. Erst jetzt entdeckte ich sie wieder, als ich meine Negative sortierte, was ich gerne in den Wintermonaten mache. Ich schaute sie mir genauer an und sie erzählten den Tag weiter, erinnerten mich auch an die Rückfahrt danach, vom Sonnenuntergang bis in die Dunkelheit, mit einem kurzen Stop bei der Pizzeria am Fuße des Berges und unsere Fahrt hinauf nach Monte A Pescia in totaler Dunkelheit.

I’ve been to Italy often before, but before this trip, I was very fond of Emiko Davies‘ cook books and website including wonderful pictures of Tuscany. She is Australian and lives with her husband and their two daughters in Florence. She knows so many recipes she has collected from her travels through Italy and from her husband’s family that it’ll bring you through a whole spring and probably summer too.

Manchmal ist es ein Buch, der Urlaub einer Freundin oder die Webseite einer Fotografin, die inspiriert, woanders hin zu gehen. Ich war schon oft in Italien, doch vor diesem Urlaub war ich ganz angetan von Emiko Davies’ Rezeptbüchern und ihrer Webseite mit wunderschönen Fotos der Toskana. Die Australierin wohnt mit ihrem Mann und zwei Töchtern in Florenz. Von ihren Italienreisen und der Familie ihres Mannes hat sie so viele Rezepte gesammelt, dass man sie einen ganzen Frühling nachkochen kann, und wohl auch noch einen Sommer lang.
